Local Flavours
The objective for this project was to create a set of two craft beer cans, representing something about Ottawa. I chose to theme my cans around two of my favourite events and activities in the city: Ottawa Comiccon and the Orpheus Musical Theatre Company.
connection to community
Before getting too far into the project, I did some research into the craft beer company I was designing this set for: Covered Bridge Brewing, a small independent craft brewery located in Stittsvillie who love to collaborate and partner with local events and businesses. I thought that this seemed very fitting for a set highlighting local events. For the cans themselves, I wanted something fun, colourful, and eye-catching to capture the energy of the theatre and comic book/fandom cultures each. Because both are so broad and diverse, I chose to use a collection of icons from each, mixed with notable Ottawa landmarks in styles that reflect each medium, (comic book panels for Comiccon and theatre programs for the theatre,) to represent a little bit of everything that makes these local activities unique.
Showing them off
After completing the cans, I went on to create a short animated advertisement announcing the set. My aim was to make something fun and upbeat with lots of movement to match the energy of the cans themselves.
A project for my own heart
In the end, I was thrilled with the way this project came together. The two cans feel like a matching set, while being distinctly unique and representative of their individual events. The cans are bring and bold and, most importantly, feel like something I would absolutely pick up at the store. I truly enjoyed this project and would love to do more in the future.
