Quo Beauty
The intention of this project was to redesign a product’s packaging, making it more sustainable. I chose to redesign the package for Quo Beauty’s cotton facial pads, as the slim plastic bags are both unsustainable, and quite difficult to use. I wanted to create something recyclable, and more accessible for the user. I actually did this project twice, choosing to revisit my first design on the second go around and create a matching package for Quo Beauty’s cotton puffs.
Improving What Worked
After doing some research on the product and getting an idea of some of the things I'd need to consider in this redesign such as different variations of the product, store display requirements, and quantity of text required on the package, I set to work coming up with an effective design. What I settled on was a simple hexagonal tube, just large enough to comfortably fit the cotton pads, all stacked up, the same way they sit in the current package. From there, the package went through a few sessions of prototypes and subsequent tweaking; sizing adjustments were made and some of the glue tabs were changed to ensure sturdiness and usability, and a perforated strip was added along the front of the package, making it much easier for the user to access the contents. The different variations of the product each have a different coloured package, maintaining the colour scheme the brand already uses, so as to maintain the recognizability of the products, even after the packaging change.
When revisiting the project later on, I wanted to ensure that the second product’s packaging was easily recognizable as part of the same line of products. I chose to keep the same shape and exterior design style, only changing the proportions to better suit the different product. The main issue that I had found with the first package was the lack of resealability offered with the perforated strip, as such, I wanted to find a better option this time around, introducing a flap, which can be closed as needed.
A Cohesive Set
Overall, I’m quite pleased with how each of these packages turned out. The hexagonal shape is great for stacking on shelves and the clean, bright style is recognizable and suits the brand well. If I were to revisit the project, I might go back and come up with a way to solve the resealing issue with the cotton pads’ package; perhaps a sleeve that would fit over the top. I’d love to revisit this projects and expand on it in the future.
